The Blanket by Lia Claxton

Growing up in a deeply religious household instilled in me a belief in the existence of a world beyond our visible one. This belief was further reinforced by my education at a religious private school and regular attendance of church every Saturday. Unlike many in my community, my fascination with the paranormal bordered upon obsession. I was intrigued by stories of ghosts, spirits, and otherworldly phenomena, often burying my head in fantasy books, always eager to learn more about the unseen forces that linger just beyond our perception.

This story, my personal encounter with what I can only describe as a "glitch in the matrix," unfolded over several weeks, leaving me with more questions than answers though.

The first signs of something amiss began in the most mundane of settings—my bedroom, as I lay on my modest twin bed. Each night, just as I was about to fall asleep, my bed would start to shake. It was a subtle, yet unmistakable vibration, one that stopped the moment I moved. This nightly occurrence quickly escalated from a curious anomaly to a source of dread.

Approximately two weeks into this unsettling routine, I transitioned to a queen-sized bed, because my legs had begun to hang over the small one. This new bed was not only larger but also significantly sturdier than my previous one, implying that it would require considerable effort to make it shake. My superstitions led me to adopt a peculiar sleeping habit—I always tucked my blanket under me, a protective measure against the "jumbi," a term from my Caribbean heritage referring to demons, monsters, and malevolent spirits. It was a practice I believed would safeguard me from the unseen.

However, the very first night in my new bed challenged all my precautions. As I lay there, the bed began to shake with a violence that surpassed anything I had experienced before. The shaking was so intense, so vigorous, that it seemed as though an unseen force was determined to make its presence known. In that moment, panic took hold of me. My usual tactic of making a sudden movement was futile; the bed continued to shake.

Then, as if the situation couldn't become any more terrifying, something even more inexplicable occurred. Just as I began praying for protection, my blanket was yanked from under me and thrown onto the floor. The abruptness of it left me frozen in fear for a moment before I mustered the courage to act. I leapt out of bed, heart racing, and quickly turned on the lights.

I searched my room, every possible hiding spot: the closet, under the bed, behind curtains—anywhere a person or thing could hide. But nothing. My room was exactly as I had left it, with the exception of my blanket lying in a heap on the floor. My door remained closed and locked. I was alone.

It never happened again. And to this day, I cannot offer a rational explanation for what happened. The events of those few weeks have stayed with me, a haunting reminder of the unseen world I've always believed in. While some might dismiss it as a trick of the mind or an elaborate prank, I know this was not the case.
