The Swarm By Haley Baird

We thrive in the flesh of the dead

Invisible until we are not

No sound to be heard, no warnings given

Two wings

Two eyes

Six legs

Delicate as one

But as a unit

We are strong, a matter to be reckoned with

An infestation of horror

We mastered the art of spies

We always find a way in

Fast through the wind

We do not need honey

Nor hive

Just drifting through the air

We hover and scatter for

Light

Warmth

Blood

As one we are alive

As one we are something feared

No need for a queen

No need for a leader when our minds are one

Our goals are one

Multiplying and multiplying

Nothing can stop us

Not even your cup of vinegar

Can keep us at bay forever

We silently grow

Waiting for our next battle

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

As a child, I always went through life looking out the car window while listening to an angsty 2012 hit, and fantasizing about what people would say at my funeral or what the speeches would look like. I told this to my therapist, and she told me that normal ten-year-olds don’t dwell on such things.
